Travels, Day 1

January 21, 2014

After an early flight out of Seoul and a ridiculous transfer in Kuala Lumpur, I arrived in Phuket with Jason, Ashley, and Kaley. First realization on getting into our taxi: they drive on the wrong side of the road in Thailand. We arrived unscathed somehow, and mere minutes later, while settling in to our bunk beds, there was a scream! Panic ensued as everyone looked at Ashley, inquiring what, really, is all the fuss about?

"A cockroach," she said/squealed.

So naturally, Jason being the manly man he is and Kaley being the helpful person she is, the cockroach was hunted down and basically murdered.
As you can see, I offered absolutely no help. Just sat perched on my bed, laughing and photographing.

We left shortly after in search of dinner. An Indian restaurant down the road looked good, so we sat down and ordered a bunch of Thai food. And it was delicious. As in, super-stupidly delicious. Throughout my life, I've heard vague references to Thai food being good, but now I realize how drastically undersold the glory and the potential mouth-wonderfulness of Thai cuisine was. More on that later.
We headed to that place next. A smallish market, many vendors beginning to close up shop. We walked around, bought some mangoes, lychees, and mini-mango things.
 And saw this stuff:

And that's that. It was a long day full of too much airport and not enough Phuket, and we had a longish journey to look forward to the next morning.

Up next: ferry and first impressions of Koh Lanta.
